Core Concept

Answer Engine

Short answer

An answer engine is a system that returns a single synthesized answer to a user's question rather than a list of links, drawing on AI models and often live web retrieval; examples include ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Answer engines represent a fundamental shift from the search engine model. Instead of ten blue links the user must evaluate, an answer engine reads the sources, decides what is relevant, and produces one composed response, sometimes with citations. This means there is no ranking position to compete for, only inclusion in the generated answer.

For brands, this changes the optimization target entirely. Visibility now depends on being mentioned or cited inside the answer, which in turn depends on being retrievable, authoritative, and consistently represented across the web. The rise of answer engines is why AEO and GEO exist as disciplines.

DeepLexa is purpose-built to query answer engines the way real buyers do and report back whether you made it into the answer.
