Grounding

Short answer

Grounding is the practice of tying an AI model's generated answer to specific, verifiable external sources, typically via retrieval, so the response reflects real, current information rather than the model's unaided guesses.

Grounding is what separates a confident-but-fabricated answer from a sourced one. When an engine grounds its response in retrieved documents, it can cite where a claim came from and is less likely to hallucinate. Most modern answer engines ground their answers by retrieving and quoting from live sources.

Grounding is the mechanism through which your content earns citations. If your pages are retrievable, authoritative, and clearly answer a question, they become the sources an engine grounds its answer in, and credits. If they aren't, the model may ground on a competitor or, worse, invent an answer.

DeepLexa's best-practice guidance centers on making your content the grounding source: retrievable, cleanly structured, and backed by the citations and data models trust.
